Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community! We value the time you have taken to post and inform us about the issue you are experiencing. I’m sorry to hear your keyboard and USB are not working properly. I can certainly understand your concern, especially taking into consideration that this is a new device. I would like to help and do my best to guide you in the right direction!
First of all, please know I appreciate all the details and screenshots you have provided. It is always very useful in order to have a better understanding of the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting.
The most basic but important step is to make sure you have all and latest Windows updates installed and that they were taken while to Type Cover was attached. Take into consideration there was an update released this past Tuesday 8/12/14.
Additionally, we suggest you try a two button restart:
- Power off the Surface Pro
- Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
- Release buttons
- Wait 5-10 seconds
- Power on the Surface
When you Refresh/Reset your device, the drivers are usually uninstalled and reinstalled, nevertheless, we ask you to please do this manually as shown below:
- From the Desktop, swipe from the right and select Settings.
- Select Control Panel.
- Select Device Manager.
- Select Keyboards (in your case Other Devices)
- Touch and hold over 'Surface Type Cover Filter Device”.
- Select Uninstall Driver Software (Please DO NOT check the box saying “Delete the driver software for this device”)
- Follow instructions.
- Restart your Surface.
If after the previous steps your Type Cover 3 still doesn't work properly, repeat the steps from 1-6 and click “Delete the driver software for this device”, then restart your Surface and allow Windows to reinstall the driver.
I’m also including the support article with more troubleshooting steps for your Cover and the detailed instructions on how to Refresh your device:
Solution 6: Refresh SurfaceRegarding the USB, it definitely sounds like a hardware issue, and for this reason, we highly recommend you contact our Technical Support team by visiting our Surface Online Service Center here or our Contact us page here.

Best Wishes,
Hi, I have recently had my Surface Pro 3 and Type Cover replaced under warranty. As the Surface device was received approximately 2 weeks before the Type Cover I proceeded with loading all of my software and configuring the device to suit my needs using a Logitech wireless keyboard. However, when I received my new Type Cover I found that it would not work.
I subsequently carried out some investigations and attempted to resolve the matter. A concise summary of actions taken and results are as follows:
On inspecting the list of items in my Control Panel | Devices and Printers I found that my Type Cover was listed as an ‘Unspecified’ Item and in Device Manager the Type Cover is listed under ‘Other Devices’.However, when I examine the Properties of the Type Cover it reports the following:
This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

I subsequently uninstalled the driver and used the two button shutdown and start up process to shut down the Surface and bring up the configuration menu.NB:The Type Cover up/down arrow keys and Return Key all worked correctly in the Configuration Menu.On restarting the Surface, I returned to the Device Manager the Type Cover is again listed under ‘Other Devices’ and showing the error message per above. I subsequently chose to update (as opposed to uninstall) the driver and it then returned the following message:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.

Windows found the driver software of your device (online) but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.
I understand that I could simply reset my surface to its Delivery state, however, as I have spent over two days installing and configuring software onto it I would see this as a very last resort, hence am hopeful that some-one with knowledge and expertise with theses devices will help me easily resolve this issue.
